Who Wrote the Works of William Shakespeare? | The Graduate Times

For many years, conspiracy theories have existed as to who truly wrote the works of Shakespeare. With Shakespearean works maintaining a great influence over modern society, this is an important issue to address. There have been many theories put forward as to the ‘true author’ of the Shakespearean works including Henry Neville, Edward de Vere and Francis Bacon. It is believed by some that William Shakespeare is not the author due to his limited education, travel experience and given his poor social background. ‘The Bard’ is said to have probably only studied basic reading and writing at King’s New Grammar School. Oxfordians (those who believe Earl Evere to be the true author) argue that he was better known as a businessman than a playwright in Stratford. That is not the only reason behind the claim that others can be considered true contenders for the penmanship of the plays and sonnets, there is textual proof that seem to dismiss his authority. Some also ascertain that the other authorial candidates had closer ties to the royal family and therefore knew the accurate details given in the historical plays. Finally, a great effort was put into keeping the author’s name anonymous, with some sonnets published in an unauthorised manner. Derek Jacobi, former artistic director of The Globe is amongst the 1400 who have signed a “Declaration of Reasonable Doubt”. He says he is “99.9 percent sure” that the actual author is Edward de Vere. He claims that the proof that Shakespeare is not the author is contained in the First Folio of the plays published in 1623, seven years after his death, and very little is known of his life. He states that it would be important to establish where Shakespeare would have gained the life and travelling experience necessary for such plays. Evere on the other hand was well educated and travelled extensively. Another theory that has been less developed is an assertion made by Herbert Janvin that Shakespeare’s epitaph contained the hidden message: ‘Francis Bacon wrote Shakespeare’s plays’. Francis Bacon was a philosopher, scientist, lawyer, statesman and author and so certainly had the potential to have written the works accredited to Shakespeare. The unauthorised publication of some of Shakespeare’s works have also put into question his authorial authority (in 1599 and in 1609 sonnets were published without his permission.
