DVD reviews: 'Rio' charms with stunning animation

Carlos Saldanha, the director of the "Ice Age" franchise, takes to the air with another animated pack of animals in "Rio." Visually speaking, this one's a gem, but falls short in story and dialogue. The major player here is Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg), a domesticated macaw living in Milwaukee with Linda (Leslie Mann), his human owner. When it`s discovered that Blu is the last male of his kind, he`s taken to Brazil to mate with Jewel (Anne Hathaway), a wild female. Getting the two birds to mate is one problem, but a bigger one is the poacher trying to sell the birds to the highest bidder. Standard DVD and Blu-ray extras are about the same, including a handsome collection of making-of featurettes and interactive extras that will get the kids up off the couch. Deleted scenes are also available. G; 2011. 2 Stars.
'Exporting Raymond'
A handful of American shows have been remade for Russian audiences, and they've become rousing successes including "The Nanny" and "Married With Children." Now, the funny "Exporting Raymond" introduces us to this process. The documentary chronicles "Everybody Loves Raymond" creator Phil Rosenthal's work in transforming his show into a hit on Russian TV. Most of the laughs come from the clear examples of how far behind the country is with TV production and cultural differences that exist between Russians and Americans. Rosenthal's brilliant sense of humor ties all of this together, as he navigates the crazy hurdles existing in the confines of Russian TV. Directed by Rosenthal, "Exporting Raymond" covers casting, story re-writes and staff changes in making "Everybody Loves Kostya." Also, viewers get an honest look at the struggling Rosenthal during this transformation. Additional laughs can be found in the special features. Specifically, the Rosenthal commentary is good stuff. Most importantly, two full episodes of "Everybody Loves Kostya" are included. Some deleted scenes are also available. PG; 2010. 3 Stars.
'Outside the Law'
French director Rachid Bouchareb's quick-witted action movie picked up a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Award earlier this year. The director was also nominated for an Oscar for 2006 war film "Days of Glory." "Outside the Law" is considered a standalone follow-up to "Days of Glory." Coincidentally, both pictures have lead characters with the same names and take a strong stance in regard to the treatment of Algerians by the French. "Outside the Law" tracks three brothers living in France after World War II. Abdelkadar (Sami Bouajila) and Messaoud (Roschdy Zem) are freedom fighters for Algeria, and Said (Jamel Debbouze) is a street-wise hustler who makes his money off of pimping and boxing. As Abdelkadar and Messaoud establish themselves in the militant underground, the police close in on the two brothers who won't back down. The film is slow in spots, but consider it another nice piece of work from Bouchareb. Interviews, deleted scenes and a quality making-of featurette boost a strong set of special features on DVD packages. R; 2010. 3.5 Stars.
