Ticket to Write | Steve Stephens commentary: Discoveries map the way to happiness

One of the joys of travel is discovering little bonuses along the way: an unexpected view, a surprisingly good meal, a quaint shop that has just the thing you're looking for (or something great you didn't know existed).

I'm a cartophile (map lover), so it's not surprising that some of my best "Aha!" travel moments involve old maps, which can pop up in unexpected places.

I had one such moment recently at the McCook House State Memorial in Carrollton.

The house, which belonged to the "Fighting McCooks," a family that sent 14 men to aid the Union cause in the Civil War, now serves as a Civil War and Carroll County museum. So it was no surprise to see the museum's nice collections of military weaponry, old musical instruments and the like.

But an item hanging, almost as an afterthought, on an interior wall between two main display rooms, was what really caught my attention - a map, of course.

I'm sure most visitors don't give the map a second thought. It's old, pretty (at least to a map lover), a bit tattered, with an interesting vignette of Cincinnati in the bottom right-hand corner. I think I might have let out an audible "Whoop!" when I saw it, however.

I felt as if I had spotted an ivory-billed woodpecker perched on a traffic signal.

The map in question was produced in 1838 by Charles Whittlesey and engraved by Cincinnati printers Doolittle & Munson. Thomas Smith, in his book The Mapping of Ohio (the standard reference on the topic), calls it "Probably the rarest, as well as the most accurate map made of Ohio during the 19th century."

Smith identifies three known copies, one each in the Ohio Historical Society Library, the Ohio State Library and the Library of Congress. I haven't seen any of those copies. But I recognized the map immediately from the photo in Smith's book.

The map has been hanging in the McCook House for at least three decades and perhaps much longer, museum manager Shirley Anderson told me.

As few as 150 copies of the map were printed. Each Ohio county auditor received a copy.

Most of the maps were discarded long ago, but apparently someone at the Carroll County Courthouse, located less than a block from the museum, was prescient enough to save this one.

Not as rare, but still a pleasant surprise, was a map I saw hanging in the Pufferbelly Restaurant in Kent - a Horace Thayer & Co. Ohio Railroad and Township Map produced in the 1850s, another map I'd never been able to examine in person. What made the sighting sweeter still is that the Pufferbelly (and the map) is located in Kent's historic old railroad depot.
