Press Run: Raven Symone may have taken my job, but not my modeling memories

C alling my mother is always an interesting endeavor. We always get lost in some memory of my childhood and the conversation, which started out as a quick call to answer one question, turns into a longer talk followed by more questions.

Having a short term memory isn’t so great, but being able to remember key points from my childhood is wonderfully nostalgic. When speaking with my mother on July 4, she helped me to remember all the modeling pictures I took as a child, imagining in my mind how her faces scrunches up with big smiles and laughs as she talks about all the pageants and contests.

None of those pageants or contests were followed by trophies, but I didn’t care. I was three. And my mother was nothing like the mothers you see on that show “Toddlers and Tiaras.” Cute baby dresses and big smiles were my plan. There were no baby swimsuit contests and “how-much-makeup-can-you-wear pageants” on my to-do list.

My mother set up an audition or something when I was three or so and we were living in Atlanta at the time. She told me, later on when I was much older, that Raven Symone went before me in the audition and that’s why I didn’t get the job.

July 4 was the day research confirmed a crazy memory of my mother’s. Raven Symone was born in Atlanta so it would make sense that at the age of five, since today she is 25, she would be auditioning or starring in say...The Cosby Show. It’s hard to believe I ever got the chance to audition for the Cosby Show, so a little more research showed that she was involved in the same modeling agency my mother got me into. It finally adds up.

All children are welcome from newborn to 12 years old. To enter the contest, a portrait sitting can be made at your local MotoPhoto studio. Choose from three categories: hats of any kind, a vintage theme of old style black and white and toned prints or summer imagination.

No fees are attached to entering the contest, but MotoPhoto will insist on giving you a free 5”x7” portrait of your contest entry with each donation of $9.95 to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

The facility is new and fancy and federal…and a four-hour drive from dc..

it reminds me of an eerily quiet high school…

im greeted at the front desk by a pretty girl that looks like Raven Symone… with fake eyelashes and perfect MAC makeup… a generic black windbreaker & black pants…she smiles when she takes my id…there are no other people in the lobby… a pizza delivery guy shows up with two pies…. & raven  excuses herself…i read the signs about the dress code while she tries to round-up cash for the pizza guy..

no medical scrubs, no tank tops, no khakis, no grey t-shirts (hmm thats what im wearing) no shorts (oops again) no see thru clothing.. no vulgar words etc …
