Yarn: 3-ply wool yarn at about 1000 yd/lb, 250 g/9 oz white and 450 g/16 oz black Needles: Cn 80 cm, 3 mm and 3.5 mm/32 in, US 3 and 5; 40 cm, 3 mm and 3.5 mm/16 in, US 3 and 5; spn 3 mm and 3.5 mm/US 3 and 5. Gauge: 25 sts = 10 cm/4 in The sweater is knitted in the round, and the armhole is cut open. The sleeves are knitted in the round from the top down. The front of the sweater may be cut open for a cardigan, and both the front edges and cuffs may be decorated with embroidery.

Note: To obtain an even and pleasing result when joining yarn, overlap ends by 15 cm/6 in. You can make extra-smooth and almost invisible joins by removing one ply from each end and overlapping the remaining yarn.

Assembly: Weave in all loose threads. Position each sleeve and baste a cutting line on the body for the armhole, then machine stitch a double line on each side of the basting and cut the opening. The opening for the sleeves plus gusset will be about 31 (32) (33) cm/12»/i (121/2) (13) in. Leaving 25 cm/10 in for the neck opening, sew the shoulders together by turning under the edge at the purl row and grafting the shoulders together. Turn the work to the wrong side and sew down the turned-in facing from shoulder to shoulder.
