The magic man: Daniel Radcliffe readies for life after 'Harry Potter'
Before Monday’s New York premiere. That means he only missed three performances, which they agreed to cancel “so nobody will go away disappointed,” Radcliffe says. I know, right? That’s the kind of guy he is. I met up with the actor, who’s possibly one of the most mature 21-year-olds ever, in New York for an interview and photo shoot for this weekend’s cover story , and while there is some sadness for leaving something he’s been doing since he was 11 (alongside fellow stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson ), Radcliffe is pretty ready to move on from Hogwarts, wizardry and Quidditch. When I look at those first couple of films, I go, “My God.” The bravery it took on the part of Chris Columbus to say, “Yeah, I’ll make these films,” is massive. I think I only started to feel the pressure of what a big series this was on maybe the sixth film. I started going, “Wow, this is a big deal and I have a certain standard that I now have to maintain.” Really, I think we got, not a free pass, but in terms of our acting we were given a lot of time by audiences to mature and get better. And I think it was about around the time of the fourth and fifth film that people really started to expect something of quality in that respect when they came and saw the film. That was when we, the young cast, started to feel the pressure slightly.
Either reading or doing the movies, have you found a life lesson somewhere in Harry Potter Through the process of making the films, I’ve learned everything I know about how to live, just through being on set with so many people and many of whom I have great respect and friendships with, who I learned everything from about my own morality and my principles and what I think is important. That was where I learned all that stuff. I don’t know if any of that I also got through watching the films. For me, I think I’m probably too distracted by the fact that I’m watching me in the films to pick up any morality lessons.
