Range Regional Airport May See Drop in Air Service
Discussions in the House of Representatives may lead to a drop in funding of the Essential Air Service, a program that ensures rural communities like the Iron Range get air traffic.
Senator Al Franken is fighting to continue federal funding for the E.A.S.
"I am going to be trying to persuade Delta and trying to make sure with the essential air service program that we have the funding to make sure as much traffic can go up to Hibbing as possible," Franken said.
The Range Regional Airport's current E.A.S contract expires in October.
Between now and then the D.O.T will re–bid air service routes to Hibbing.
"We'd probably have get some type of consultant to help us locate a carrier and to entice a carrier," Barrett Ziemer, Assistant Director of the Range Regional Airport said. "And really put together a package to sell to a carrier that we have a market that will be able to provide service here."
Finding another carrier is not something the Executive Director of the Range Regional Airport sees happening in the near future.
"Right now we are on the growth list for Delta Airlines," Shaun Germolus said. "We are up 25 percent from 2009 to 2010. We are up about three or four percent this year from last year. I expect us to continue on that growth rate."
Concerns have been raised that without funding, it may be difficult to retain business and attract economic development in the rural communities on the Iron Range.
But those who use the airport say its convenience factor will keep them coming back.
"Its saving us two days going down to the airport and two days taking them back," Karen Wetzel, an Iron Range resident picking up family from the airport said. "So its' very convenient. It's a little more money, but it's the cost to drive your car down and stay in a motel, so we figured this is the way to go."
The Range Regional airport plans to sign another contract with the U.S Department of Transportation which will guarantee service to Hibbing for another two years.
Other cities in danger of losing flights include Bemidji, Brainerd and International Falls.
Germolus says he's been working closely with International Falls Airport authority to develop a plan that may join air service routes.

VATSIM has recently created the SimRadar Controller Software for Air Traffic Controller training. SimRadar allows controllers that are currently enrolled in training to interconnect their Air Traffic Control stations to each other one a single network to practice air traffic control co-ordination skills and procedures. VATSIM is the first to engineer such a software and has been invaluable to Air Traffic Control (ATC) training. If you are interested in more information about updates regarding VATSIM software for ATC then please sign up in the VATSIM forum. The VATSIM forum will provide you with alot of information about software and server products offered by VATSIM for ATC.
VATSIM is a Canadian based company that uses Virtual Airlines, Flight Simulation and Flight Simulator to create software for real world airlines and Air Traffic Controllers (ATC). VATSIM has created the very successful SimPilot software for Flight Simulator that allows Flight Simulators to be interconnected on a flight simulation network so that airline pilots can join in flight training sessions together online while being under the control of a single Air Traffic Controller (ATC). VATSIM has offices in Canada, UK, Australia and the USA where VATSIM distributes is pilot client and ATC client software for flight simulation training.
VATSIM provides sophisticated software for virtual airlines to use. VATSIM’s software for virtual airlines allows virtual airlines to recreate real world airline operations while VATSIM can use these virtual airlines to study aviation economics in a simulation environment.
VATSIM works with airlines from all over the world to develop the most sophisticated software for airlines. These have included training software and economics and passenger forecasting software for airlines that are starting up or opening new routes. VATSIM has assisted many startup airlines in developing their business and fligth crew training plans.
VATSIM has created one of the best selling airline dispatch software systems available in modern aviation. The VATSIM dispatch system for airlines will make all of the necessary calculations, flight planning and resources that airline dispatchers need. If you are interested in more information about the VATSIM dispatch system for your airline then please contact VATSIM for more information.
VATSIM continues to partner with airlines to develop the most up to date dispatch and passenger reservation systems available. VATSIM routinely tests out it’s software on the SimMiles system, which uses virtual airlines to simulate real world airline operations, in order to ensure that all parts of VATSIM’s software is working before it is released to airlines. SimMiles has a network of virtual airlines in a closed circuit system that allows the VATSIM airline software to be tested out by volunteer airline enthusiasts prior to it’s implementation into the real airline world.
