It was my A&R guy over at MCA Records who was at the mall with his kids one day and looked around and said, ‘What about singing in a mall?’ It totally made sense to me because that was really where I hung out. So it was really easy for me. It created a mean shopping habit for me, but I had a blast with it!” “I have many regrets in fashion! When you look back at my style then, you think of the jumpers and the big hoop earrings and my Vans and jean jackets. For so many years, especially in my early 20s, I was like, ‘Don’t you ever put another jean jacket on me!’ But now I love jean jackets. I think it’s safe to wear one again! I was really pulling out of my closet back then and wearing my own wardrobe. And nobody ever did my makeup.” “They have a lot more freedom nowadays. I think they have more longevity as well. Cyclic Defrost: Husband – Love Song/Slow Motion (Robot Elephant)

Bologna-based drone-pop duo Husband (real names Gianlorenzo and Chiara) have already received considerable blog hype in recent months, with this debut double A-side 12” on UK label Robot Elephant ‘Love Song / Slow Motion’ offering up the first taste of the duo’s recorded output, with two new tracks collected alongside four remixes. ‘Love Song’ nicely introduces Husband’s darkly hued pop aesthetic, placing a clattering monotonous drum groove beneath thin yearning male vocals, whilst spectral harmonic drones, analogue bleeps and jagged goth-rock guitars a in manner that calls to mind some inspired meeting between Suicide and The Jesus And Mary Chain with its relentless sense of mechanical rhythm and subtle placement of melodic elements.

‘Slow Motion’ meanwhile manages to inject an additional sense of rockabilly swing as buzzing overdriven analogue synths squeal and menacing bass drones swirl amidst tribal snares and eerily disembodied-sounding male / female duet vocals, and indeed it just edged its way out in front as my favourite of the two original tracks on offer here. There’s also a fairly strong selection of remixes included here, two of the biggest highlights being the gliding, minimal electro-laced ‘Mascara mix’ of ‘Love Song’, which slowly winds itself up into pulsating tech grooves before relaxing back down again, and Soft Metals’ rave-pilfering remix of the same track, which calls to mind the likes of Pictureplane with its cascade of knowingly cheesy bright synths. An impressive first taster from Husband for those who like their pop dark, murderous and drone-y.
