As Drayton McLane leaves baseball, he still maintains a commitment to community

TEMPLE — The Army needs new logistics software and Baylor needs a football stadium, but for now they’ll have to wait because Drayton McLane needs lunch.

So he begins the drive into town and doesn’t stop until he’s reached his usual destination. It’s the midpoint of being the everyman and being the man in this Central Texas community of 60,000 that has always been his home but will play an even greater role in his life next month, next year and beyond, when McLane is no longer the owner of the Astros.

Literally, it’s Clem Mikeska’s, a sanitary but hardly upscale barbecue joint about four miles from the sanitary but hardly upscale headquarters of the McLane Group. And as McLane settles in the back with some colleagues, the whispers fade in and out in the front of the restaurant.

“… In the back, by the wall. … It’s definitely him.”

It was definitely him, aka No. 288 in the Forbes 400, about to turn a good deal of his $1.5 billion worth into liquid when Jim Crane’s group officially takes over the Astros at a price of $680 million.

McLane announced the sale with the intention of moving on to the next chapter of his life, and that chapter is largely set here.

“I’ve never sat still in anything,” McLane said. “There will be other opportunities. I have a number of able, capable executives here, and they’re always wanting to see the businesses grow.”

That chapter will begin once Major League Baseball deals with one of its saddest chapters involving the Dodgers. For now, McLane is still the owner of the Astros.

And while the Scott and White Clinic needs money for a children’s hospital and the flock at Temple’s First Baptist Church need to hear the Word from their part-time Sunday school teacher, right now the Astros need some runs.

So Drayton’s going to find them …

Long walks in the park

His walks, like those of an ineffective reliever, are predictable.

McLane spends the first two-and-a-half innings at Minute Maid Park watching from his vantage point directly behind home plate. In the middle of the third inning, he vacates that ultra-photogenic spot. He walks and talks, talks and walks.

It’s these walks that he will miss the most.

“The best part of owning the Astros is interacting with the fans,” McLane said, but that is only part of the walk.

He knows the employees by name and many by backstory. He pleads with them for runs or for pitching or anything else on which they can’t deliver more than a smile for the somewhat grandfatherly character.

As Drayton McLane leaves baseball, he still maintains a commitment to community

While some businesses spread out across Texas and across the world, there was never a sense in Temple, according to some business leaders, that McLane would ever outgrow the town or just leave for convenience's sake. They said he was too loyal.
