GIG HARBOR — It is pointed out to director Jeff Richards, during a recent phone conversation, that his frequent Paradise Theatre collaborator, Howard Knickerbocker, is getting a reputation for cross-dressing roles.
"I'll tell you what he's getting; he's getting a wardrobe," joked Richards, who cast Knickerbocker as one of the two ugly stepsisters in Paradise's upcoming production of "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella."
Knickerbocker, a Paradise regular as both an actor and musical director, made quite a splash in the opening production of the current season, "Hairspray," donning a beehive wig and makeup to play Edna Turnblad. He was anything but a drag in drag.
He and Jeffrey Bassett, who plays the other ugly stepsister, "are a stitch" together in women's togs, Richards said.
The casting of two middle-aged men as the Stepsisters (we'll just assume the "ugly" from here on out, given the whole they're-being-played-by-men thing) gives you an idea of the tone of Rodgers and Hammerstein's take on the rags-to-riches fairy-tale.
"The whole thing is very broad," said Richards. "That's one of the things I like about it; it feels like a breather. It's magical, it's great for kids, it's shorter (than the usual musical) ... it's just fun, good music and a lot of laughs."
The Stepsister role is quite a switch from Bassett's most recent role — he played the ultimate man's man, Baron von Trapp, in CSTOCK's "Sound of Music" last spring.
Rodgers and Hammerstein were well established as Broadway hitmakers when they tackled "Cinderella" as a television special — their first foray onto the small screen. It was originally telecast live on CBS on March 31, 1957, with Julie Andrews in the title role. The team had only two more musicals in them after that, but the last one — "The Sound of Music" — re-teamed them with Andrews and became one of the most beloved and enduring entries in the musical-theater genre.
