Ashton reflects on Johnson's royal punishment for wedding shenanigans
Chris Ashton and several England team-mates were subjected to a gruelling hangover cure after a boisterous weekend at Mike Tindall’s wedding, as they took part in squad fitness tests ahead of the first World Cup warm-up game on Saturday.
The Northampton wing and a host of his Test colleagues, including captain Lewis Moody, Ben Foden, Dylan Hartley and Jonny Wilkinson, were in Edinburgh to see Tindall marry Zara Phillips.
England manager Martin Johnson allowed the players to take a break to savour the occasion but yesterday morning it was payback time.
Five days ahead of the sold-out Investec international against Wales at Twickenham, which marks the start of the competitive countdown to the World Cup, the squad were put through a series of arduous drills to gauge the fitness progress they have made since coming into camp in mid-June.
It is understood the results were extremely heartening, but the whole process was far from enjoyable for the Edinburgh contingent in particular. Tindall, however, was given permission to miss the gruelling session, though he did take part in the afternoon rugby.
Ashton said: ‘They normally give us programmes through the weekend but they didn’t last weekend because they knew a few of us would be going up to the wedding and having a drink - to give people a chance to relax knowing that we were going to go hard this morning in fitness tests. I think they have managed to get us back if we had a drink this weekend!’
Asked if anyone had been physically sick during the tests, he added: ‘No, fortunately not. I think it’s because no-one ate breakfast, so we were all all right.’
For the second time in three months, Ashton is sporting a black eye and once again the damage was done by a fellow England back.
This time the flying fists of Leicester centre Manu Tuilagi were not responsible. Instead, he was accidentally hit by Matt Banahan during last Thursday’s high-octane trial match at The Stoop.
‘I tried to turn in a tackle and he hit me in the face, unfortunately!’ said Ashton. ‘It’s always the eyes for some reason. You’d think I could take a bit, wouldn’t you? Everyone who has seen it has thought it was Manu.
