"There were children all over, but there was a cluster against the fence," said Leana Timothy, who was supervising the playground at Evelyn Williams at the time of the shooting.

Timothy testified that she was standing in the area of the school's basketball court when she noticed the children clustered around the fence that bordered the school yard, looking at something off to the north.

After one child came from the fence and told her something, Timothy said she started trying to get the children to come away from the fence.

"I wasn't able to," she said, adding that it was difficult "because they were telling each other what was going on."

"Children are curious," she said.

Testimony about what the children said to her was not allowed, because it was hearsay.

However, Timothy testified that about the time a second child came to tell her what was happening, or maybe a few minutes later, she heard a gunshot and called 911.

Other testimony Friday focused on a cell phone that police say they found in the field behind the school, where prosecutors contend Encarnacion was beaten.

Prosecutors say that Flanders dropped the cell phone as he was beating Encarnacion.

However, the testimony about the cell phone on Friday became problematic when attorneys were unable to locate a form showing the chain of custody for the phone.

Prosecutors had called George Felix, a forensics supervisor at the V.I. Police Department, to the stand, and he testified about the crime scene.
