Juvenile arrested in Wapella park vandalism

WAPELLA — A juvenile was arrested Monday on charges that he vandalized Wapella Community Park.

DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner said more than $3,000 worth of damage has been done at the park since March, including spray painting, broken light poles, broken glass globes and damage to buildings.

The Wapella boy was released to his parents and is awaiting a court appearance, said Shofner, adding a tip from Clinton Area Crimestoppers played a key role in the investigation.

“We had a tip over the weekend that provided the information that we needed to make an arrest,” said the sheriff, who thinks the juvenile is responsible for all of the damage reported at the park.  “We think he is the principal suspect, but I don’t expect any other arrests,” he said.

Last week, Shofner issued a news release asking for information about the vandalism.

“The tip came through Crimestoppers and it just shows what a terrific program it is and we appreciate the public’s help in this matter.”

The sheriff declined to disclose the boy’s age.

Under provisions of the Illinois Juvenile Court Act, names of people under 17 years of age are not a matter of public record in connection with certain offenses.

Interview – Ryan Denham Reporter for The Pantagraph - @midWest ...

I’m Ryan Denham, a reporter at The Pantagraph – the newspaper, not the machine used to make life-size toy versions of Kris Kringle in the film “The Santa Clause 2.” (True story.)

How do you walk the talk re: social media?

Using Twitter, Facebook, etc. to deepen my source base and reporting, and to help curate a world full of news for a local audience.

What one practical tip can you recommend regarding the use of social media?

Don’t fake it. I think LinkedIn is stupid, so I don’t play around in there. I think Twitter is an unmatched, must-read local news feed, so I dive in.

What do you think is the perfect age?

As a lover of craft beer (and the occasional not-so-craft beer) and all things Vegas, I’d have to say age 21 is as good as it gets.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Entertainment news. I frequent a steady rotation of blogs/news sites devoted to movie and TV projects in development, the crown jewel being Finke’s deadline.com.

What are you really good at?

Staying organized.

Name one thing you will never understand.

Why anyone would buy an e-reader when iPads exist.
