An Iowa City Endeavor (That Didn't End in Iowa City)
HARTLAND, Wisconsin, August 2. DURING the summers, my articles have focused on anecdotes that were used to draw attention to larger points, issues or trends. Often, they would assume that these anecdotes were commonplace. This feature is a bit different, though. Throughout the piece, I will take you into my head while we're on the road; I'm writing in the present tense, but as this appears on the web, these events will be in the past. The road trip is a quintessential part of championship swimming for senior swimmers. In my six-year career, a four-hour-plus interstate drive to a sectional meet seems normal, even a necessity. Everything about the trip itself getting away from home, going to a new pool (or one I haven't been to in a while), even escaping from the parents makes the destination feel like a championship environment. I can't count how many times that I've been on an extended trip to a meet, and I haven't even been swimming for very long. Between the college, club, and high school seasons, I've been on trips in 15-passenger vans, coach buses, school buses and mini-vans. And as different as the circumstances have been for all those different means of transportation, there's been one thing that was constant: I was always traveling with a group. Subsequently, our coach and the rest of our Lake Country Phoenix teammates are on their way as well. They're living out what I think is the stereotypical swimming road trip, in a two-car convoy of a 15-passenger van and a mini-van. Besides the unusually small group that our team has traveling to the meet, everything about the trip should be perfectly usual for them. Our goal was to make it different, though. Cody and I are the only male college swimmers that came back to swim for Lake Country. Collectively, we're two years older than the next eldest traveling Lake Country swimmer. We've got a slight case of the "I'm sick of club swimming" bug that pervades college swim teams everywhere. We still love swimming for Lake Country, but there's just a point where we need to spread our wings a bit. Well, sort of. Actually, the main reason for our separate travel and lodging is because we're meeting up with my college roommate, Hueston Holder, at our destination. Hueston lives in Iowa, and is the only swimmer from his team at the meet.Men In Steam Rooms - News

Or maybe that taste is left over from sitting in the steam room at the pool – I guess I can't be sure. Nope, it does actually feel good to be on the way home. It doesn't really matter how well you swim at a meet, when you're so far away from home and
Both men got sent to their rooms. With Krupa, Elise, Gina, Monterray and Tommy gone, both teams finally managed to serve the rest of their guests. However, Ramsay declared no winner and asked each team to submit two names for elimination.

TODAY, I visited a Turkish Bathhouse for the first time.
Having seven hours to spare in Antalya, I was looking for something to do. After eating three or four times in a half-hour period, I had to find an alternative form of entertainment.
I was walking through the old area of Antalya and came across Seda Haman, I think it was called. The sign said it was 600-years-old and cost 35 YL for the Turkish Bath and massage.
I was told not to go alone by an colleague back in Australia because it was daunting but I went anyway. As scary as the thought of a Turkish Bathhouse is, I decided to go anyway.
So here’s how it went:
A man leads you to a little room where you are given a towel, some sandals and told to strip off. You are then lead to another room.
On the way to the room I saw one naked bloke being lathered up with soap by an aged man who was also only wearing small towel (it might have been small white nappy – I was trying not to look).
The steam room was all marble and had a huge dome ceiling. The brochure said the bathhouse was from the 1450s and was of Selçuk Turk design.
There were two men in the steam room. One bloke was washing himself and the other was just wandering around. I sort of just sat there – not quite with my back to the wall but pretty close.
Eventually the old bloke in the nappy came and told me to come back to the first room. It was this point he told me to lie on the marble slab and he started throwing bowls of hot water on to me. This certainly kept me alert.
He then started scrubbing sandpaper all over me, as he swapped back and forward from throwing hot water on me. He also started singing.
It was a very daunting experience all right, especially when he flipped me over and started lathering me up with soap (thankfully not in the rude bats but). He also slapped me on the legs and said something in Turkish. It was all matter of fact and I felt like a piece of meat.
Eventually after I was head to foot in lather, including my hair, he splattered me with hot water again, rinsed me off and sent me back to the steam room.
I had no idea what to do next. As I sat there trying to copy the first bloke I saw by pouring water all over myself, a bloke started talking to me. He had been looking at me funny and I can’t say whether it is because I was a foreigner but I felt distinctly uncomfortable.
