A group of local high school students are spending this week getting a taste of newspaper and online journalism. While they bring with them a set of varied skills, all seven teenagers offer a youthful perspective with an eagerness to learn.
For nearly a decade the Independent Record has hired a team of young writers, photographers, and in more recent years, videographers, in a partnership with the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds and Montana RV Center, to write, shoot and produce complete coverage of the Last Chance Stampede and Fair happenings. Each day readers can see photographs and read stories delivered to their front door or at the click of a mouse watch student produced videos.
Andy Anderson, Hunter Feiss, Hilary Nelson, Laura Marsh, Olivia Keith, Keegan Kier and Kayla Robertson are this year’s staff for the Stampede Standard. They gather daily in a “newsroom” at the fairgrounds where they work with professional journalists to tell the stories that unfold throughout the week.
The fair is a landmark summertime event bringing animals, action packed rodeos and hundreds of vendors for visitors to enjoy. This year’s theme, “Fair Gone Wild,” kicks off today with a parade in Downtown Helena (1 p.m.) and a nighttime concert with country music star Joe Nichols. The student writers begin today by covering the parade.
Nelson and Keith are two returning Stampede Standard staffers. Nelson recently graduated from Helena High and Keith will graduate this coming spring.
Nelson enjoys the playful atmosphere the fair offers. She said it was last year’s experience where she found a new interest in photojournalism. She also enjoyed growing as a writer and videographer as she faced looming deadlines. This fall, she plans to move to Walla Walla, Wash., and study biology at Whitman College.
“I like shooting the people,” Nelson said. “I love getting expressions on their faces. There are so many different types of people so there’s a lot of different subject matter to capture.
