Chocolate lily irresistible to flies
Each of us concentrated on those insects we know the best. For me that was the aquatic dipterans known aschironomids. The larvae develop in various aquatic habitats, become a pupa for a few days, and then emerge as an aerial adult. They look like miniature mosquitoes but the adults do not feed. As adults they simply mate, deposit eggs and die in about a week. While usually very small in size, they are extremely numerous. Due to their large numbers, they dominate most aquatic habitats and are a food source for many other animals in or around the stream, lake or pond. At one point during our three days of insect collections, we were taking a break in a moist meadow beside a stream. I spotted a couple flowering chocolate lilies. They usually have two or more beautiful, brown-colored flowers with speckles of yellow or green on the petals. Their pistils (female flower parts) are usually light green and the stamens (male flower parts) are bright yellow. These light-colored reproductive parts are easily spotted since they contrast with the dark petals. The flowers are quite attractive and the name is easy to remember because of the milk-chocolate color. Diverging for a moment, the idea of something other than a bee acting as a pollinator for a flower may seem foreign to many of us. However, there are no native honeybees in Alaska, so flowering plants have to attract and take advantage of whatever insect pollinators are available. While there are a few solitary bees around, flies are the most abundant insects here, so they get called into service. If you spend a few minutes watching just about any wildflower, like a native lupine or prickly rose, you will find that there are a variety of flies visiting the flowers. These bulbs are storage areas for starches and have been used by Native groups throughout the Northwest. These root bulbs can be gathered and used for a great source of carbohydrates. They can be eaten raw or dried for storage and later consumption. They can also be cooked and sometimes are mashed into a paste. The starchy nodules can have a slightly bitter taste, but when you are hungry, they will taste just fine. The next time you are walking through a local, natural meadow, look for these distinctive wildflowers. They add beauty to the area and can be a rich food source if needed. Right now they are easily found in the meadows of Turnagin Pass.David Wartinbee, Ph.D, J.D., is a biology professor at Kenai Peninsula College’s Kenai River Campus. Somewhat like the shape of a small onion, the bulb has a couple sections. The deepest portion of this bulb is the newest growth and forms small, rice-grain-shaped nodules. These bulbs are storage areas for starches and have been used by Native groups

Cosmic themes recur in “Star” (2009) an 8-foot circle studded with white LEDs, each the size of a grain of rice. The designs they create evoke star maps and roulette wheels, balancing between the celestial and the terrestrial.
The festival lasts for eight days and during that time no food containing wheat or any type of grain is consumed by devotees to remember the historic fact when the Israelis had to leave Egypt in a hurry and did not have time to prepare proper food for
Wheat growing anywhere, including a tub on your balcony is a show stopper. Wheat is so simple and beautiful as it changes from green to light brown. People stop and look, ask questions, light bulbs turn on. Growing wheat is literally 'throw and grow'
Couscous and polenta are also easy to store and easy to fix staples that fulfill the grain “wedge” of the plate. 2. Avoid storing non-food items, like cleaners, light bulbs, plastic storage containers, in the pantry. If you must, assign them their own

The lights are sandwiched between the circuit board and the switch contact board (second picture). Locate the seven solder points (last picture) where metal posts from the contacts board pass through the circuit board. De-solder these posts and slide the circuit board up and off of the electrical connector male spades. When de-soldering, be cautious not to overheat the circuit board which can de-laminate the printed circuit. Note how the switch toggle has levers (third picture, upper left) that press black pins which contact switch buttons on the circuit board to activate the auto-down feature. Do not lose these pins (or for that matter, the toggle springs and pins). The four toggle light holders can be gently raised up 90 degrees to expose the solder strips and then the wire leads can be de-soldered. First note how the wire ends are located in grooves and catch small lock tabs on the bulb holders. Once de-soldered, the bulbs are removed, the wire leads of the new bulbs pass through the small holes in the holder base and then locate in grooves. Place holder on circuit board with wires over the solder strips, re-solder the wires, rotate the holder back flush to the circuit board and thread the wires over the lock tabs and back into the grooves (cut excess wire).
