An interesting mix of classic cars, street rods, collectible autos and even motorcycles have rolled onto River Falls’ Main Street during two Sundays so far this summer, and they’re scheduled to roar in again 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 14 and Sept. 11.

A subcommittee of the River Falls Chamber of Commerce and Tourism organized the Cruze Ins to create a fun event that would draw people downtown.

An idea tossed around many times, it materialized for the first time in 2011.

Car enthusiasts bring their vehicles to park on Main Street for all or part of the day.

The cars aren’t judged, but those who register one get a chance to win a cash-prize drawing in the fall. The event also offers display or exhibit space to vendors.

Committee member Mary Waters said the first event drew nearly 200 cars; the second one had slightly more cars and spectators.

Waters said visitors came not only from River Falls but also from Hastings, Minn., Woodbury, Minn., Hudson, Stillwater, Minn., and other locations.

The committee placed signs for the Cruze In at the intersection of county roads M and FF.

“We had some cyclists that saw the signs and came in,” she said.

Committee member Jolene Larson said she’d deem the events successful and that everyone there seems happy.

“The people are just so nice,” said Larson.

She said the 11 a.m. to noon radio broadcast from the show has been interesting and that downtown businesses are glad for the traffic on an otherwise slow day.

She was tickled to see a lady at the last Cruze In wearing a traditional poodle skirt; Larson learned that the woman also makes the skirts.

Impressions

Locals Michael Woolsey and his 13-year-old son, Evan, attended the event.

Evan made a video of the Cruze In that he posted on YouTube and that Larson has used to promote the events on the chamber’s website and on Facebook.

Larson had been looking for a volunteer videographer, and Michael encouraged his son to try it.

Evan, who’s gained experience by making YouTube videos with friends, said he thought it would be a fun project.
