DEION SANDERS: 'Prime Time" may be all-time greatest cornerback
Sanders grew up in Fort Myers, Fla. Long before he played high school football, he made a promise to his mother, Connie Knight. Perhaps even she knew there would be something about the boy who grew into “Prime Time.” A cousin suggested the name Deon, but Knight added the extra letter to “dress the name up” a bit.Knight worked long hours at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers. They lived in an area where Sanders described drug dealing as the community job. “So when many naysayed me, I looked past them. When many doubted me, I looked right past them. When I was ridiculed and mocked and people point out what I couldn’t do, I looked right past them because I saw my momma pushing a cart. I don’t care what you say about me because I will retire my momma for the rest of her life, and I’m here to tell ya, she ain’t worked since ’89.” “It was difficult signing him,” said former Falcons General Manager Ken Herock, who drafted Sanders. “He’s in Seattle playing for the Yankees and hits a home run. ... We put him on a football field a couple days later, and he’s covering our best wide receivers like he hadn’t missed a beat in training camp, and he hadn’t done any football training whatsoever. It was like that for Sanders’ whole career. He played five seasons in Atlanta until he left to play the 1994 season with San Francisco. Sanders had made himself a commodity. He was a shut-down corner who could return punts and play offense. He was a weapon because with him on one side of the field, a defense could scheme to drop a linebacker in coverage and devise complex blitz schemes as well. He was flashy and maybe a bit of a distraction because of all the media attention he attracted. He once hung up on a radio reporter who had him paged at an airport because Sanders found out it was radio, not television. At his news conference in Atlanta after he was drafted, Sanders showed up in a leather jacket with “Prime Time” stitched on the back. “The year we got him, we won the Super Bowl,” said Barry Switzer, Dallas’ head coach when Sanders played. “The year before, San Francisco won the Super Bowl, and it was either going to be us or them because it was San Diego in the Super Bowl (the 49ers won), and we both knew we’d hang half a hundred on them.
