As good as golden

Yo brothers and sisters, come and enjoy the feel-good play of the year. “On Golden Pond” comes to Big Bear Aug. 5-7. Where could you have a better setting for the 30th anniversary of an Oscar-winning story than on our own golden pond, beautiful Big Bear Lake. Kudos and thank yous to Helen Walsh, president of the Bear Valley Community Hospital Foundation board of directors, for sponsoring winning combinations of performances at our beautiful Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center.

The story, with the accomplished and competent director Johnny Wells and a hand-picked award-winning cast, will create a new standard for an ageless drama. I’m really enjoying working with this cast, especially my new buddy, Garrett Evans, who plays my grandson in the show. Elena Peavy and I have had the pleasure of doing several shows together over the past few years, and we both are enjoying this crew.

Walter Con reprises his role as Bill, and what fun it is having our longtime friend Kathleen Newsome return to the stage to play Chelsea, the role of our daughter, which was played by Jane Fonda in the movie version. Larry Huffman, the pro sports announcer, is now a pro mailman to round out the cast.

This is a fundraiser for the M.O.M. and Dad Project (a parenting resource center and one of the Foundation projects) at a reasonable price that everyone can afford for an evening of enjoyable theater. A champagne after-glow will follow each performance with a meet-the-cast get together.

My last birthday cake looked like a prairie fire.

If you are lucky enough to be at the Performing Arts Center Aug. 13, we will take a journey back in time together to the slow, sweet and wonderful times of dancing at the Avalon Ballroom, Frank Sinatra at the Paramount in New York, Guy Lombardo’s “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s Eve, Kate Smith singing “When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain” on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and the original Lettermen, now called Reunion, bringing tears with the music and lyrics that we fell in love with at a time that is gone but never forgotten. The acclaimed Reunion is in concert for one night only. It’s a don’t-miss performance for a good cause (the Realtors’ Can Tree and food projects) with a wonderful afterglow party at the PAC. There are a few mic bumps and some damage apparent within several of the tracks that makes this seem like it has some tape lineage. During TMWSTW the taper goes to the bar & the mic gets bumped into submission a few times, a guy asks the taper if he's doing DAT or what sounds like "Mini D," and the taper seems to reply "MD." That would account for the really poor SFA. The TV broadcast has pretty poor sound, but the FM is nice. EXCEPT that the DJs chatter incessantly throughout the show, during the music, often just blabbering away about unrelated stuff... but on one of the pages above the Beunos Aires part claims to be a Pre-broadcast soundcheck. Now it is clear that the FM I have (sent to me by Jo�l Fievet, You still out there, Jo�l?) that the broadcast is not live, but a later broadcast, so that means that the DJ were talking over a tape, right?
