Boonville church's chool supply event a 'Godsend'

Speaking about a school-supplies giveaway at a local church Sunday, Danny McLaughlin, 35, said: "It's a godsend."

He and his wife have five children in grade school this year, and they aren't sure what they would have done without the free supplies.

He said the options otherwise were choosing a bill to leave unpaid "or hoping and praying for someone else to say: 'Hey, we have too much. Can you guys use some of it?'

"It's really not certain how else we would have done it," he said.

Living Hope Community Church, of Boonville, Ind., offered school supplies and haircuts for students in all grades as part of its 2011 Back-to-School Outreach & Giveaway, and several parents and children suggested they would be hard-pressed without it. Some 220 children loaded up on supplies; 45 students sat for trims to start the new school year.

Students in kindergarten through grade 12 got to pick up notebooks, pencils, folders, glue — and even a backpack to put them in — all for free. They even were given frozen treats, wet towels and bottled water while standing outside in the 90-degree weather (though it did rain earlier in the morning).

Four stylists from local establishments and three stylists from the church cut boys' and girls' hair a majority of the afternoon. Some students got new styles.

"Now I look a lot like Justin Bieber," said 11-year-old Brandt Hout as he combed his hair before a mirror.

"Nice haircut," his 4-year-old sister Zoe McLaughlin said.

Since 1999, a year after it was founded, the church has been giving away supplies and haircuts. Most of the donations — supplies or money — come from church members, though some local companies have been sponsors. The support has been great over the years, said coordinator Alyssa Johnson, as evidenced by her shopping cart, come gathering time.

"I'll just go out with two carts piling over, " said Johnson. "And whenever I'd get up to the cashier at Walmart, they're like, 'Oh no!'"

The supplies are appreciated by parents and students, some said.
