Newton pushing for immediate impact with 'new family'
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- As he sat in a meeting room, slipping out of his shoes while a couple of coaches buzzed around him following Sunday night's lab session of a practice at Wofford College, Cam Newton 's feet were planted firmly on the ground.
There's a playbook to learn (the one resting on a chair two feet away), and it has provided quite the NFL welcome for the quarterback selected No. 1 overall in the draft by the Carolina Panthers.
"It's been a blast to be around the football environment again, just seeing my new teammates," said Newton, whose arrival at training camp on Friday was rubber-stamped with a four-year, $22 million contract. "You try to build team chemistry on a daily basis. This is my new family.
"But at the same time, it's a fast process. A learning curve has to take place. All the success that I've had, you can throw that out the window. I've got to start all over."
Newton, who won a national championship in his only season at Auburn, looked imposing enough during Carolina's weekend practices, sans full pads. Big, strong and agile, he moved around the pocket smoothly and threw tight, hot spirals.
He provided one of the highlights Sunday night when he launched a deep bullet down a middle seam and connected with WR David Gettis for a 70-yard practice TD that ignited perhaps the biggest ovation from the few thousand fans hoping that Newton is truly the promised one.
Yet Newton also resembled the unpolished rookie that he is, too. Several throws sailed away. Some passes, including one intended for second-year WR Armanti Edwards after he had three steps on his defender on a crossing route, missed by inches.
So, there. Something for sideline critics to nitpick.
For Newton?
"It's even worse," he said. "Because I look at it as if it's so close, yet so far away. I'm trying to push myself over the hump. I don't want to think, 'Oh, I'll get it next time.' That mentality will get you beat every time."
Although he's careful not to put a timetable on how soon he expects to crack the starting lineup -- and is keenly aware of pre-draft doubts such as whether he'll transition well from a shotgun spread offense at Auburn to a pro-style system -- it is apparent that Newton wants to aggressively press any and all issues.
After just two days of practice, Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski says he's been struck most by Newton's competitive fire. He sees a kid burning to excel.
