“Why are you crazy children spinning around?” my wife will ask with a laugh when the music starts or the fit strikes them.
“We’re dancing,” my son says with a giggle as he and his sister and whoever might be visiting us spin in place with smiles that could power a small city. “Dance, Mommy!”
It a little dizzying, but they love it, and wind up laughing and falling down eventually.
I don’t know that this craze especially started at school or because of it — my little guy is still a little light on the details of his day. It may simply be something he dreamed up himself. But whatever it is, it’s one of the most delightful and unexpected signs of his growth and independence. For us, it’s a little like finding a new flower has budded and opened while we were busy tending to other things.
That for all our worries about sending him off a little further into the world, he’s showing us that he’s more than up to the task. That while we’ve been busy discussing and choosing and planning, he’s been quietly ready to grow a little more. And now that the impediments are gone, and he’s able to grow without hindrance, he’s bringing a little of his new world home to us.
