Husband shoots wife, calls police, then shoots himself

A man shot his wife dead then called police before turning the gun on himself in a home on Sydney's north shore this morning, police say.

The man, believed to have been in his mid-50s, phoned police about 1am and told them he had killed his wife at their home on Rosemead Road, Hornsby, Detective Inspector Michael Banfield, of Ku-ring-gai Local Area Command, said.

Detective Inspector Banfield said officers raced to the two-storey brick house, arriving there in a few minutes, but found the man dead from a gunshot wound.

No messages were left in the house, Detective Inspector Banfield said.

He could not say where the couple were shot or where their bodies were found in the house.

Ku-ring-gai Local Area Commander, Superintendent Michael Kenny, said later this morning that one firearm was used to shoot the pair.

He would not comment on whether the woman had a terminal illness, as reported by some media outlets, or whether the deaths were a murder-suicide or an assisted suicide.

Superintendent Kenny said he was "not prepared to disclose" how police were informed about the shootings, despite earlier reports, and instead appealed for anyone with information about the couple to contact Crime Stoppers.

He added that the shootings were the result of a "domestic incident" but would not say if an argument occurred before the couple died.

Earlier, Detective Inspector Banfield said the couple had no history of domestic violence. He said there had never been complaints by neighbours to police about the couple.

Their identities were known to police but had not been formally confirmed, Detective Inspector Banfield said.

Police would not confirm media reports naming the pair as Rodney and Marina-Louise Tuddenham.

The Tuddenhams are listed as owners of the house.

He said the couple were believed to have children, although it was not known how many or how old they were.

Police did not know what the victim did for a living and were checking whether he had a gun licence.

A spokesman for the NSW Department of Education and Training said counselling was being offered to staff and students at Ku-ring-gai Creative Arts High School, where Mr Tuddenham worked as a technical support officer.

The New Technology in Self-Deliverance Group — better known as NuTech — will hold a workshop as an adjunct event to the 16th biennial conference of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies in Toronto, Canada, on September 8-10, 2006

It was the pioneer work of the NuTech group which developed the inert gas tank and bag method of legal self-deliverance from a terminal or hopeless illness — a hastened death technique now widely used on many continents.

NuTech’s workshop will be in the Sheraton Centre, downtown Toronto, starting at 8 a.m on Sunday, September 10. All official delegates to the world conference are invited; others by invitation only.

Only persons closely involved and knowledgeable about hastened deaths are welcome — the broader issues law, ethics and philosophy are dealt with in the major sessions of the 3-day conference.

Facilitators at the NuTech workshop so far will include Dr. Philip Nitschke , from Australia, Dr. Aycke Smook, (Netherlands), Derek Humphry (Oregon), while Rod Newman from Montana will demonstrate and sell inert gas balloon kits. Other right-to-die experts are being arranged.

Also on the Nutech workshop agenda will be discussions of the feasibility of visiting Mexico to legally purchase medications suitable for self-deliverance from a terminal illness, the value of flow meters for inert gas tanks, and the latest availability and use of well-known lethal medications for voluntary euthanasia.

Previous meetings of NuTech, starting in l998 involving international experts, were held in Berkeley, California, Seattle, Washington, Vancouver, BC, Boston, Massachusetts, and San Diego, California.
