Mammography use up for US immigrants

Use mammograms for immigrants in the U.S.

WASHINGTON, DC - While mammography rates have improved foreign women residing in the United States, these women are even less likely to have undergone screening for breast cancer than American women born.

These study results were presented at the AACR Fourth International Conference on Science of Cancer Health Disparities, held September 18 to 21, 2011 in Washington, DC

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University believe that the lack of access to health insurance and a regular source of health care are important factors associated with the lowest percentage of mammography screening among immigrants in the United States.

"There is progress, overall, in the use of mammography among women of foreign origin in the United States, but there is still much work to do to improve their use of breast cancer screening recommended "said lead study investigator Nengliang (Aaron) Yao, a doctoral student in health policy and administration.

Yao and his colleagues used data from 2000 and 2008 National Health Interview Survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics and administered by the U.S. Census Bureau, looking at screening mammography among immigrants and the factors associated with the use. Information on the status of legal immigrants has not been included in the survey.

Screening rates among immigrants increased from about 60.2 percent in 2000 to 65.5 percent in 2008, and disparities in mammography use between immigrants and native women has narrowed, from 11.2 percent in 2000 to 3.4 percent in 2008.

Immigrants who have resided in the United States a decade or more had a significantly higher rate of mammography compared with those who had been in the country less than a decade (64.7 percent against 39.3 percent in 2000, 67.9 percent against 55.7 percent in 2008).

Insurance coverage have played an important role in predicting who would receive screening. In 2008, immigrant women public insurance were likely to receive mammograms that were double those of the uninsured immigrant women, said Yao, and those with private insurance were likely to more than 2, 5 times higher than women uninsured.

In addition, having a regular source of health care has also become a more important predictor of mammography use over time. In 2008, women with a regular source of care were likely to receive screening were twice as high as those for women without a regular source of care.

Yao added that there was an increase in "culturally and linguistically appropriate programs funded," such as those developed by the CDC National Breast and cervical cancer early detection program to encourage foreign women to seek mammograms, This could have led to increased use of the test.
